apparently Acomplia has just been taken off the market in Europe. This is what I saw in a recent news report. Does anyone else have any more info? Here is part of the report: "Safety chiefs have suspended the use of a weight loss drug over concerns that it may be linked to suicide and sudden death. Officials said the risk of side effects from the drug, Acomplia, outweighed its benefits.
Almost 100,000 Britons have used the drug since its launch two years ago, when it was hailed as a £2 a day wonder pill.
Health warning: Drug chiefs say doctors must stop prescribing Acomplia now But seven deaths, including a suicide, have been associated with the anti-obesity treatment, which also doubles the risk of psychiatric disorders. Around 2,500 adverse reactions have been reported by British patients since it became available to private buyers two years ago. U.S. authorities refused to approve the drug amid mounting scientific evidence of the suicide dangers.
But just four months ago Acomplia was cleared to be used as a 'last-chance' solution on the NHS by the Government's rationing body, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. But warnings on packets about the higher risk of depression, anxiety and other 'serious' side effects were strengthened after the European Medicines Agency said Acomplia should not be taken by patients with major depression or on antidepressants.
Now the EMA has decided to suspend the medicines licence for Acomplia because the 'benefits no longer outweigh its risks'."

Reply with quote | #2 | I quit using Acomplia due experiencing night terrors, sleep walking and the increase in seizures experienced by trial participants. I went from 290 to 263lbs and gained it all back after quitting Acomplia. Recently, I've lost 10 pounds through the simple (but challenging) strategy of eating less and exercising more. |

wd be nice if that worked for everybody but i was already eating only 1200 calories a day and working out four days a week and went up to 210 lbs after the initial rimonabant study ended even doing all of this. some of us just don't overeat...we have strange metabolisms. i will bet most people in this situation are post menopausal women like me. |

Reply with quote | #4 | I just had my prescription refilled? I asked the doctor about the withdrawal and she hadn't heard about it...
I'm on week 73. I have been losing weight very slowly. In June 2007, when I started, I was 85kg - I'm now 71kg (about 30lb). Not a massive amount but if I consider I have not gained weight in this period I think I am happy with the results.
SIde effects. I have numbness which may be related or not. Otherwise if I wait 1 hour before eating in the morning after taking the pill I fill no nausea which I did at the start.
I am nervous about stopping. I have made changes to my eating habits but if the hunger creeps back in I fear the weight will to - just like any other diet. ho hum.

Reply with quote | #5 | ginger, that is a really good result. When I was in the study, I was told that the average weight loss over the two years was 30 lbs. It took me two years to achieve that. This time around, it'a taken a bit over two years to lose 35 lbs. I don't know how tall you are but 157 lbs sounds great to me. It is about where I would like to be, which is about 15 lbs from where I am now. However, I am 5'7" which means 160 is not bad. When I once hit 150 lbs everyone told me I looked gaunt and I frankly agreed. Not everyone is supposed to be 120 lbs.
I am curious tho about the fact that your doctor hadn't heard. When I got the initial news report, I emailed my Brit doctor immediately to ask if I could get one more prescription and he said, no, the order was immediate and as of that day (the day before I emailed) he could no. longer write prescriptions for Acomplia. I now don't recall what day that report came out but it was a week or so ago at least. |

Reply with quote | #6 | My doctors appointment on Tuesday must have been several days after the story was on the TV news in the newspaper? Weird. I don't know what will happen next time I need a prescription filled?
I am 5'3. My ideal is weight (they say) is 133lbs but think 140 is more realistic. So 16 to 23lbs to go. My fat is bulked round my waist which is still a hefty 36 inches.
Did you do the 1st trial for 2 years - stop and then do it again?
Have you had any side effects you put down to the drug?

Reply with quote | #7 | Ginger, I took part in the Phase III study in the US for two years (the length of the study). It took several months for me to see any weight loss at all. In thinking back, I lost 30 lbs the lst year (when I am sure I was on 20mg) and held the weight loss the 2nd year (when I think I was on 5 mg). When the study ended, I started slowly gaining weight even though my food intake and exercise remained the same. The lead doctor said it was more than appetite suppressent but also something that changes metabolism. It did for me. It was about three years before the commercial drug hit the market and I've been on it a bit over two years and have lost 35 lbs as of today.
I have had some truly strange but not particularly alarming side effects. I've been constipated all my life but on this drug, I'm regular for the lst time. I was a bit speedy and anxious on the study drug and my blood pressure went up. Not so much on the commercial drug which is (regardless of what they say) slightly different.
I also had (and have) some interesting food cravings. During the study it was hard boiled eggs and gummy bear candies. Now it's chicken, eggs and vanilla cookies. I still don't eat more than about 1200 cal. a day and exercise quite a bit. There is a slight anxiety factor which I deal with by cuttng the pill in half. That means I'm really taking 10 mg a day, which seems to work best for me.
btw, the sanofi drug (the non generic acomplia) has just disappeared from the canadian website that was selling it. I am sure the next time you want to get the drug, it will not be available in the UK. The Indian generic is still around and seems to work about the same. There is apparently little difference btw Slimona and Riomont. There's a third Indian generic around but I don't know what it is or what it's like. Riomont is a round white pill. Slimona is a weird, hourglass shaped green thing. |
